給十年後的我
came across this on a friend’s fb post… i wonder what would my 20-yr old self ask my now 30-yr old self?

lessons from ing
that is what i told myself going up the hill in piedmont park at mile 22 or 23 and i will come back to talk more about it at a later time
but i finished my first marathon today!!! =)
the race thing…
1. To Court Blacks, Foes of Abortion Make Racial Case
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/27/us/27race.html?em
“Black children are an endangered species”, says one billboard at the Garnett MARTA station in downtown Atlanta. The billboard sits right outside of the city jail, next to a Grey Hound station, amongst the many bail bonds – clearly visible to the many going in and out of the corrections facility with different kinds of problems. And this is fighting against racial genocide?
Taking the symptom of a social problem – lack of access to birth control, lack of sex education – and turning it into a race problem is NOT right! I thought we were beyond the age of race, but obviously we are not, as some are playing up the race card to advance their political intentions – shame on them! And for those that buy into the race card and make decisions based on not what is right for them or their children, but these theories of conspiracy, they have been played.
Our focus should be providing options to the ones in need and helping them setting
their lives on the right track, not using
them for political gains…
2. California Campus Sees Uneasy Race Relations
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/27/education/27sandiego.html?hpw
Okay, I have to admit that I think the “Compton Cookout” was a funny idea – it is like having a high school themed party where people dress up as geeks or jocks – we can all identify certain groups (race, gender, what have you) through some signature attributes.
I remember signing a petition back in my freshman year against Ambercrombie for their "Two Wons Make It White" line of T-Shirts (in reference to the Korean Dry Cleaners, I believe) – now 6-7 years older and hopefully also wiser, I wonder, was that really worth protesting for?
Recently, someone complained about naming the MARTA route that leads to the predominantly Asian community in Doraville the "Yellow" Line – the officials took swift actions to correct all the in-train announcement to the "Gold" line. As MARTA now runs a $120M deficit for the next fiscal year, I hope they are not wasting money on changing out the in-train posters instead of fixing the escalators that stopped running back in November – are we that racially sensitive that we have to lose sight to what actually impacts our daily commute? (http://www.itsmarta.com/Yellowline.aspx)
Okay, back to the issue at hand at UCSD, since I find the cookout itself an entertaining idea, I could not blame the student media for running a program about it. However, I do find the noose at the library unacceptable and I am 100% for disciplinary actions.
We should carefully evaluate what really impact our daily lives and focus our efforts on the most critical issues – sometimes, being racially sensitive can only hold us back. At the same time, I have to stress that we need to know which lines NOT to cross, certain actions are offensive and will not be tolerated.
3. District May End N.C. Economic Diversity Program
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/28/us/28raleigh.html?hpw
I fully understand the benefits of diversity in ours primary and secondary schools because we want our kids to grow up in an environment where they understand the differences in people and can learn from each other, but is busing kids 17 miles away from where they live really the solution?
Revamping our education system to provide opportunities to all the children and really leave no one behind should be the goal, but getting there calls for better teachers, better schools and better parents all around. This should never be a race thing, socio-economically disadvantaged children need schools to provide them with a positive outlook in life and prepare them for a desirable future, and a school next to their houses staffed with capable teachers can do just that!
The UCSD article also touched on the subject of education in the race context: since the state law barred the use of race and ethnicity in admissions decisions, enrollment has dropped for Black and Latino undergraduate students. This is a reflection of the inadequate primary and secondary education system that did not prepare all the children for college. In a world where we teach our children equality everyday, we should never set differential standards, not for college admission, not for anything. The struggle to diversify college campuses can only be solved by fixing the public education system, not by affirmative actions…
chinese new year!
my annual cny party went well last week – good food and good showing. it was a bit later this year since cny was during valentine’s day weekend and i didnt want to clash w/ people’s weekend plans. the week before, went to a banquet hosted by some chinese american association, it was an interesting event and good networking opportunity (guess not having a business card presented some slight challenges for that), but then again, im not looking for a job and i already knew how to get in touch with the person that i needed to talk to…
econ class is going well and have recently started helping out a former colleague w/ his new business venture – it is good to work on stuff outside of work and switch things up a bit – just a couple of more weeks till i hear back from school!!! i’m excited =)
anyway, on another note: every now and then, there is a topic that i feel strongly about – either work-related or just something i’ve read/heard on the news. i think i should stay away from blogging about work since i should keep it professional and work gets enough publicity without me adding oil to it! (add oil!!!) for the other topics, sometimes political, i might start writing them down… we’ll see how i feel tomorrow morning and might talk about these endangered species billboards around the city…
happy 2010!
2010 will be an awesome year!
i will figure out an update schedule and share the tidbits of life on a regular basis.
yay for a new year! =)
new year’s day menu this year:
- roasted pork
- mustard green (just salt, pepper and thai chilli pepper)
– black eyed peas (bacon, onions, carrots)
- egg nog panna cotta (w/ spiced pear sauce)
avatar, the new pocahontas story
really enjoyed the movie – it was beautifully crafted for a fantastic visual experience, although the story was very simple (some would say predictable), it was thought provoking at the same time.
hidden under the blue sky on planet pandora, the pocahontas storyline is set in the 2050s. as the movie repeats the same plot of a civilized group of people trying to take resources from the tribal/primitive indigenous people who are more in tune with their surroundings, i can almost hear vanessa williams singing "you can paint with all the colors of the wind" again. industrialization has exponentially increased our appetite for resources, and as a result, the industrialized (aka "civilized") countries/race/group of people started a hunt for more, either $20M/lb of mineral rock on pandora, or land in the "new world". in this quest for more, the indigenous people were sacrificed, either by leaving their natural habitat (forced into areas of less resource importance) or by leaving behind their way of life (assimilated into the main stream civilized culture). colonization then becomes the unintended consequence of industrialization and impacts both the civilized and indigenous cultures, unless (spoiler alert!!!) the indigenous people can successfully defend themselves against the machine guns and missiles from the civilized invaders.
many other places were less fortunate than pandora in protecting their ways of life from colonization. it is interesting that the indigenous na’vi people in avatar, however alien they are supposed to be, are depicted to have strong facial features (high cheek bones, thick lips), dress in tribal clothing with less coverage, use animal-like expressions (hissing and howling) when angry or sad, and practice large scale pagan worship ceremonies. doesnt that remind us of the people of pocahontas?
by "survival of the fittest", where big guns seemingly are equal to "more fit" for survival, we reached the environmental dilemma in the movie: was it okay to advance the simple pocahontas way of life to the comfortable modern way of living (we can give them blue jeans, but do they want blue jeans?) with one tree-huger notion in mind, "we are only borrowing the energy that we will eventually return", we can all continue to enjoy the comfort of our blue jeans, but moderating our consumption will allow us to borrow less and steer away from the path of forcefully taking over pandora for its resources in the next 40 years!
this was a much more serious entry than my normal snippets of life, but i have to end on a regular note of silliness: i LOVED how being connected to
nature would also allow for crazy cool stunts like flying the "big birds" (not
sure what the technical names are for the blue or the super big red
birds)
xmas dinner menu
- stir fried green beans w/ spices (mom)
- roasted chicken w/ gravy (me)
- beef stew w/ turnips (mom and me)
- buttermilk blueberry cake (me)
- and of course, rice on the side
found these braising recipes at the kitchn that looked amazing – need to try some soon!

home improvement checklist
1. paint patio walls
2. plants on the patio
3. re-tile bathroom (fixing the hole first!)
4. toilet/sink (maybe?)
5. kitchen cabinets (darker brown paint/stain)
6. kitchen lights (re-paint ceiling and change out the track lights (need more energy efficient ones – they are burning the ceiling)
7. kitchen back-splash (tiles?)
8. chalk wall in kitchen (replace the white board and move white board into storage!)
9. built-in bookshelf (need to re-do the crown molding to make it look like it is all part of the whole set-up (see below, inspiration indeed)

new york
first of all, thank you starwood for all the fantastic locations and cheap redemption options (four points by sheraton at time square was in a great location, a little noisy w/ constructions, and the rooms are a little small, but i loved it)
shopping:
- top man had a great sale. i could not believe how many items were at 10 and below (i got my two shirts for 30 bucks and they would’ve been over 100 if at regular price) w/ my good eyes, i of course also picked out this red jacket that is limited edition top man design at 50% off (from $120 tho, so that did not come home w/ me)
- vintage thrift store around NYU. it took some digging, but a nice paul smith for 16 bucks aint a bad deal – there was another shirt for 12 that i also liked, but i could not justified getting four "casual" shirts in one day before i get into a school first!
- jcrew stores all around the city. i think the total count was 5 stores not including the fancy "men’s shop" on broadway. can’t beat the 12.99 pants that were 69 – who pays 69 bucks for a pair of light chinos nowadays anyway? i thought we were just recovering from a recession
- nike town has good bags. i need a backpack for grocery shopping, so i wont have to shift the weight in the puma messenger when im on the bike and risk shifting myself off the bike. found a great bag on sat, but hesitated because i wanted to find the puma bag and compare before committing to it (saw the puma at lenox a while ago, but have not seen since). the puma on broadway had the bags i wanted (in black and red), but it just didnt feel right. when i got back to nike town, the 75 bag was gone (sold out?), but i found a slightly more expensive one that fit the description (i have my gift card from discover, so it was still a good deal!)
food:
- carnegie deli. this place is amazing, will try more than just corn beef next time, i think the brisket and pastrami would be just as fantastic!
- schnipper’s sloppy joes. the milkshake was even more awesome than the joe! sweet potato fries were fab too
- cafe zaiya, st. marks (grand sichuan, some japanese noodles place – dont get their wings and beer specials, the wings aint that great)
fun:
- hamlet was awesome. jude law was great and the rest of cast did their two lines each, so they were great too!
- columbia is pretty! me wanna go!!! =)
o, jude!!!
